Understand the SwimSafer pathway
SwimSafer 2.0 is Singapore's national learn-to-swim and water-safety programme. It develops swimming ability, water-safety knowledge and personal-survival skills through six progressive stages. Singapore Aquatics states that each stage comprises approximately 12 hours of lesson time, although a learner's preparation time can vary.
SwimmingCoach.sg is an independent swimming-lesson provider and information website. It is not Sport Singapore or Singapore Aquatics. Coaching can help a learner prepare, but it does not guarantee assessment results or certification.
Six progressive stages
Stages 1 to 3 build foundational water confidence, independent movement, swimming skills and survival awareness. Stages 4 to 6 are the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, with progressively more demanding swimming, survival and rescue-related skills.
Use the current official syllabus to confirm the exact skills and assessment criteria for the learner's stage. Requirements may change, so avoid relying on an old checklist or third-party summary alone.
Preparation is different from assessment
Lessons and practice prepare a learner for the required skills. Official completion of a stage requires both components specified by Singapore Aquatics:
- a practical assessment in which all required criteria are completed competently; and
- an online theory quiz with a passing score of 90%.
A certificate becomes available only after both components are completed for the relevant stage.
CAMS registration and assessment
SwimSafer assessments are administered through the SwimSafer Centralised Assessment Management System (CAMS). Participants must be registered on CAMS before they can be registered for an assessment. A recognised SwimSafer coach must validate registrations made by participants or parents.
Assessment venues, available dates, fees, deadlines and operating procedures can change. Check the current Singapore Aquatics SwimSafer page, CAMS Handbook and Sport Singapore programme background before booking or making travel plans.
What to confirm before choosing preparation lessons
- the learner's current stage and starting ability;
- whether the proposed coach has current, relevant SwimSafer recognition;
- lesson location, pool-access rules and any entry charges;
- lesson duration, frequency, fees and cancellation terms;
- how readiness will be reviewed;
- who will handle CAMS registration and assessment validation; and
- whether assessment fees are separate from lesson fees.
Frequently asked questions
How many SwimSafer stages are there?
There are six progressive stages. Stages 4, 5 and 6 correspond to the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
How long does each stage take?
Singapore Aquatics describes approximately 12 hours of lesson time per stage. Actual preparation time depends on starting ability, confidence, attendance, practice and readiness for the required skills.
Does completing lessons automatically earn a certificate?
No. A learner must complete both the practical assessment requirements and the online theory quiz for the relevant stage. Coaching or lesson attendance alone is not certification.
What score is required for the online theory quiz?
The current CAMS handbook specifies a passing score of 90%. Check the latest official handbook before assessment in case requirements change.
Can SwimmingCoach.sg guarantee a pass?
No responsible provider should guarantee an assessment result. A coach can prepare the learner and assess practice readiness, while the official assessment determines the outcome.
Where can I confirm current assessment details?
Use the official Singapore Aquatics SwimSafer page and CAMS resources for current registration, venue, scheduling, fee and assessment information.
Enquire about preparation
When enquiring, provide the learner's age, current stage, recent swimming experience, preferred pool or area, and suitable days and times. The team can then check an appropriate programme and coach availability. Confirm the coach's relevant SwimSafer status and all assessment arrangements before booking.
