Check the Coach, Not Just the Pool
If you are looking for a swimming coach at Tampines Swimming Complex on Level 6 of Our Tampines Hub, the venue is the easy part. The person teaching matters far more.
The most useful things to check are the coach's current teaching qualification, first-aid and lifesaving status, experience with learners like yours, and how they communicate with you. This page lists the questions to ask before you book.

Teaching qualifications to ask about
Ask which swim-teaching certificate the coach holds, who issued it and when it was last renewed. Common ones in Singapore include NROC registration and certificates from bodies such as AUSTSWIM, Swim Schools International (SSI) or STA. A company’s accreditation does not automatically mean every coach holds that certificate, so ask about the coach who will actually teach you.
First aid and lifesaving currency
A coach teaching in a public pool should hold a current first-aid and CPR/AED certificate and a lifesaving award. Ask for the expiry dates. Certificates lapse, and a coach who trained years ago may no longer be current.
Safeguarding and conduct
For children, ask how the coach handles physical guidance in the water, where parents should wait, and how changing-room arrangements work. A good coach will explain this without being asked. Parents remain responsible for supervising children outside the lesson itself.
Experience with your learner
Teaching a nervous adult, a toddler, a SwimSafer candidate and a learner with additional needs are different skills. Ask how many learners like yours the coach has taught recently and what a typical first month looks like. Be wary of anyone who promises a fixed number of lessons to learn, or who says lessons make a child drown-proof.
Communication with you
Agree how progress is reported, how lessons are rescheduled, and what happens if the pool closes for lightning or haze. Female-coach requests can be made but depend on availability, and a public pool is shared with other swimmers.
Questions to ask before booking
- Which coach will teach, and what are their current certificates and expiry dates?
- Is the lesson one-to-one or shared, and how long is each session?
- What is the total fee, and is pool entry included? (It usually is not.)
- What is the policy for weather cancellations, make-ups and refunds?
